The Holland of the windmills and the wooden clogs almost only exists in the postcards; that of the multicolour tulips only in a season at the year, while that of the channels; of the polders, of the water-scooping machines and of the big hydraulic engineering works is absolutely real.
The medieval small towns are true and charming on the Ijsselmeer, from Volendam to Marken, from Hoorn to Enkhuizen and true is the glamour of the savage Frisian islands, windswept sand cordons where the flights of the big flocks alternate themselves to the lighthouses and to the small pretty villages of red bricks.
Amsterdam, the true capita, is one of the towns plus cosmopolitans of the World, always contradictory and full with glamour; The Hague, the seat of the government, is an aristocratic and elegant town.
Despite the high density, the skies almost always grey and the strong urbanization, living everywhere is a little pleasant (in the northern Leeuwarden, between Middelburg and Delft channels, under Utrecht and Haarlem bell towers, between Naarden walls.
